The Christianity and History Forum (formerly the Study Group on Christianity and History) has been in existence since the existence since the 1960s. We aim to promote  academic study of History grounded in a biblical Christian outlook; to encourage those studying and teaching the subject to approach it from a Christian perspective; and to contribute to historical understanding of issues relevant to the present day church. We welcome participation from anyone in sympathy with these objectives. This website is currently under (re) development, but please see below for a taster of recent and upcoming activities.

Future Plans 2026-7

We will next be meeting for a day conference in Oxford in late February 2026 with a particular focus on exploring the theory of History from a Christian perspective.  There will also be an online conference in late 2026 or early 2027. Our next residential conference, following our two-yearly cycle will be in September 2027. Please watch this space for further information or contact Prof John Wolffe,. john.wolffe@open.ac.uk

Autumn Conference 2025

Our biennial residential conference was held at All Nations Christian College in Hertfordshire from 2 to 4 September with the theme of 'Crisis and Change'. 22 people attended and we enjoyed relaxed opportunities to connect with both old and new friends as well as listening to a stimulating range of papers covering periods from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries. Keynote presentations were given by Dr Alison Searle (Leeds) on Transatlantic Early Modern Protestant Archives and Literary Care Giving; by Prof David Bebbington (Stirling) on The Evangelical Bible Crisis of the 1920s and by Prof Brian Stanley (Edinburgh) on 'The Missionary Lexicon: Change  and Continuity in Protestant Mission Discourse from the 17th Century to Today.
